Audiences let you group your members so you can act on them as a set: grant a group access to a course, or send them a targeted Newsfeed post. You build audiences from the People area of your academy. Lists are groups you curate by hand. Segments are saved filters that recompute themselves as members match your rules.

Lists

A curated group of members you add and remove yourself, by hand or via CSV import. Membership only changes when you change it.

Segments

A saved filter (for example, “stalled in Sales 101”). Membership is computed from your rules and stays current as members enroll, progress, and complete.

Where to find audiences

Open People from the owner sidebar. The rail on the left lists All members, Invited, then every List and every Segment you have. Click a List in the rail to see who is on it, or a Segment to see its rules and a live preview of who matches, without leaving the page. Use the + next to Lists or Segments to create a new one.

Lists

A List is a hand-picked group of members. Use one whenever you want a stable set you control directly, such as VIP clients, a cohort, or a beta group.

Create a list

1

Start a new list

In People, click + next to Lists in the rail.
2

Name it

Give the list a name (for example, “VIP clients”) and an optional description so you remember what it is for.
3

Add people

You land on the new list, ready to add members.

Add and remove members

From a list’s view, open Add people and choose how people join:

Add from academy

Pick from your existing academy members. Only people who are already members of this academy appear in the picker, and anyone already on the list is filtered out.

Import from CSV

Upload a CSV with an email column (a name column is optional). Emails that match an existing academy member are added; any that do not match are reported back to you so you can follow up.
You can also select rows in the All members view (or any quick view such as Stalled 14d+) and use Add to list on the bulk bar to add several people at once. The list shows its own table of Person and Added (the date they joined the list), with a search field. To remove someone, use the remove control on their row. Removing a member, or deleting the whole list, never touches the member’s account, enrollments, or course progress. It only changes who the list targets, and you can add a member back at any time.
Lists populated by CSV or from outside the app show a source badge (CSV import or Synced); hand-curated lists show no badge. Lists created and managed through the API show as Synced.

Report on a list and email it

A list doubles as a cohort. Switch a list from People to Brief to see how the people on it are doing in a course: readiness, survey answers, before and after ratings, and check results, with a CSV export. See Cohort brief. Email people at the top of a list sends a reminder email to everyone on it, or only to those who haven’t started, haven’t finished, or haven’t answered a survey.

Lists and course access

To give a group of members course access, grant them an offer: from each member’s Access tab, or by attaching the offer to their invitations so they arrive with it. Access granted this way is per member, so you stay in control of exactly who holds what. You can also connect an offer directly to a manual List from the offer’s Members tab. Everyone on that List holds the offer for as long as they remain a member. Add someone and the covered courses unlock; remove them and that path to access ends.
Because a list can carry access this way, deleting one ends whatever its members were getting through it.
Offers members purchase manage their own member lists automatically; those do not appear here. See Managing Members for access and progress.

Segments

A Segment is a saved filter that defines its membership from rules instead of a hand-picked list. You never add or remove people directly: members fall in and out of a segment automatically as they match (or stop matching) the rules. Segments are computed on demand from current enrollment, progress, completion, and welcome-answer data, and they always include only members with active access in your academy.

Build a segment

1

Start a new segment

In People, click + next to Segments in the rail.
2

Name it and add conditions

Give it a name (for example, “Stalled in Sales 101”) and add one or more conditions.
3

Choose how conditions combine

Set Include members matching to All (members must meet every condition) or Any (members who meet at least one).
4

Check the live preview, then save

As your conditions become valid, a live preview shows how many members currently match plus a small sample. Save when it looks right.

Available conditions

You can build a segment from these rules:
  • Enrolled in course: actively enrolled in a chosen course
  • Enrolled before date: enrolled before a date you pick
  • Enrolled after date: enrolled on or after a date you pick
  • Enrolled in last N days: enrolled within a rolling window of days
  • Completed course: finished a chosen course
  • Completed lesson: finished a chosen lesson
  • Course progress: progress in a chosen course compared against a percentage (for example, less than 25%)
  • Answered welcome question: picked a given option on one of your choice questions. Appears once you have welcome questions turned on. From the Welcome questions panel, the count beside each option links straight to a segment builder pre-filled with that answer.
Combine conditions with All to narrow a segment (enrolled in a course and under 50% progress), or Any to widen it (completed course A or course B).
If a condition points at a course, lesson, or question you later delete, that condition simply matches nobody, and the segment editor flags it so you can fix or remove it.

Targeting an audience

Once a list or segment exists, you can target it in these places:

Course access (Lists only)

A List can carry an offer: use Grant to a list on the offer’s Members tab, and membership drives who holds it (see above). Segments cannot gate access; they are for messaging and insight.

Newsfeed posts

In the Newsfeed composer, send a post to Everyone or target specific Lists or Segments.

Insights

Filter the Overview, Audience, and Courses tabs of Insights, and the course insights they open, to one or more Lists or Segments.

Cohort brief (Lists only)

Open a List’s Brief for one report on how its people are doing in a course. See Cohort brief.

Reminder emails (Lists only)

Email people on a List sends a reminder with a button to each person’s next lesson. See Reminder emails.

Preview

Open your academy as a Segment from Preview to check what that audience sees.

Manage lists from the API

The same Lists you see in the People area are exposed through the public Lists API. The API and the UI operate on one set of lists: a list created or updated through the API appears here (marked as synced), and a list you build here can be read and updated through the API. Use the UI for hands-on curation and the API when you want another system to keep a list in sync.
Creating audiences can be subject to your plan’s entitlements. If you hit a limit while creating one, the app will tell you and point you to your plan.
